Monza 1000km race in 1971 - 1000-km-Rennen von Monza 1971

Porsche 917K, winning car from Pedro Rodríguez and Jackie Oliver

The tenth 1000 km race of Monza , also 1000 km di Monza, Trofeo Filippo Caracciolo, Autodromo Nazionale di Monza , took place on April 25, 1971 at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza and was the fifth round of the sports car world championship of that year.

Before the race

In the week before the race, a dispute began between the organizer and representatives of various racing teams about the route. The dispute was triggered by Enzo Ferrari , who demanded harassment at the end of the fast straight. He did not hide the fact that he wanted to slow down the fast 5-liter Porsche 917K , as he hoped that this would benefit the Ferrari 312PB . He received support from the Autodelta race director Carlo Chiti . However, those responsible for the two Porsche teams rejected this request and threatened a racing boycott if the chicanes were installed. As Clay RegazzoniIn unofficial test drives with the 312PB drove a lap time of 1: 24.800 minutes, the matter came to nothing. The time achieved by Regazzoni was faster than his best lap in Formula 1 - Ferrari 312B at the Italian Grand Prix in 1970 , where he 1: 25.200 minutes reached. The 1: 24.800 also corresponded exactly to the pole position time of Vic Elford in the Porsche 917K from the 1000 km race of the previous year .

The race

The team of John Wyer reported for the regular teams Pedro Rodríguez / Jackie Oliver and Jo Siffert / Derek Bell two Porsche 917. Also, the Martini International Racing Team by Hans-Dieter Dechent arrived with two 917K that of Helmut Marko , Gijs van Lennep , Vic Elford and Gerard Larrousse were driven. The Scuderia Ferrari reported a 312PB for Clay Regazzoni and Jacky Ickx . Autodelta came to the race with three racing cars plus one training car. The six drivers were Andrea de Adamich ,Henri Pescarolo , Rolf Stommelen , Toine Hezemans , Nino Vaccarella and Nanni Galli . After Galli had an accident in the rainy Friday practice session and injured his wrist, five drivers had to share three racing cars in the race.

At the start, Mike Parkes in the Scuderia Filipinetti's Ferrari 512S / M took the lead from the second row of the grid, past pole-setter Vic Elford. However, his leadership was short-lived. After the fourth lap the two Wyer-917s from Rodríguez and Siffert were at the front of the field, ahead of Elford in another 917 and Jacky Ickx in a Ferrari 312PB. The leading Porsches quickly set themselves apart from the rest of the field with consistent lap times of less than 1: 25,000 minutes. In the 12 laps, Arturo Merzario overtook the Ickx 312PB in the Ferrari 512M of the Escuderia Montjuich when a collision of four cars occurred a little later. Merzario's Ferrari only collided with the Porsche 907 while lappingof the German amateur racing driver Willy Meier . The spinning Ferrari was then hit by Hans-Dieter Weigel's Porsche 908/02 . The Porsche 907 caught fire. While some drivers were able to evade with their cars, Ickx crashed into the wreckage of Merzario with the 312PB. Although all four vehicles were badly damaged, the drivers were uninjured.

The two Wyer-Porsches dominated the rest of the race until the end. Jo Siffert lost three laps in the pits because he drove over a part of the wreck after the four-way collision, which led to a puncture. In addition, dirt had stuck the windshield in such a way that it had to be laboriously cleaned. Behind the two Wyer-Porsches, Andrea Adamich and Henri Pescarolo in the Alfa Romeo T33 / 3 finished third overall, six laps behind.
