  • December 9 : in Bangkok , the Olympic Council of Asia unveils the official anthem of the sports organization. The work is a grouping of sounds from the cultures of the Asian continent to represent their cooperation and unity. [ 3 ]
  • December 10 : a plebiscite is held in Uruguay to submit a constitutional reform to the citizens' consideration that establishes internal elections for a single candidate per party and the second electoral round ; the vote is practically tied, and the count of observed votes continues until January, when the so-called Constitution of 97 finally comes into force .
  • December 17 : in Peru , an MRTA command seizes the Japanese embassy in Lima , where a party was taking place, retaining more than 600 people. That same night they will release all the women. The remaining 72 hostages will be released on April 22, 1997, when the Armed Forces entered the embassy and executed all the guerrillas.
  • December 20 : In Latin America the broadcasts of the American cable television channel for children Nickelodeon begin .
  • December 29 : in Guatemala , the URNG and the Government sign a peace treaty, after 36 years of internal struggles.
  • December 30 : The term New Economy is used publicly for the first time in the United States in BusinessWeek magazine in Michael J. Mandel's report called "The Triumph of the New Economy."

  • October 31 : Philips announces that it was leaving the production of the DCC ( Digital Compact Cassette ) format , although it would maintain the supply of tapes and its technical service for users until 2006. This format had been launched on the market only 4 years earlier , in 1992 .
