"April 20" is the title of a song by the Spanish band Celtas Cortos .

Description

Written as a letter addressed by the author to an old friend, nostalgically recalling the good times lived in the past with their common group of youthful friends. [ 1 ]

The song also speaks of a weekend in the past that was spent in Cabaña del Turmo , an existing refuge in the town of Benasque ( Huesca ), in the Estós Valley . [ 2 ]

Cabaña del Turmo, in the Estós Valley

However, the author, Cifuentes, has revealed that the lyrics are not based on a true story. It was composed while working as a social worker in the town of El Tiemblo . [ 3 ]

The title of the song alludes to the first verse of the song, which reproduces the one that would be the heading of the letter: April 20, 1990 ( 1990 ). The song was written yet in 1991. [ 4 ]

The issue was number one on the list prepared by the radio station Los 40 Principales the week of April 18, 1992 .

The repercussion was such that the Municipal Group of the United Left in the Valladolid City Council , presented a proposal - which finally did not prosper - so that the name of José Antonio Primo de Rivera Street , would be renamed April 20 . [ 5 ]

The official video for the song was not recorded until many years after being released on 20 April 2019. [ 6 ]

25th anniversary

When the 25th anniversary of the date was fulfilled, that is, on April 20, 2015, a nostalgic wave occurred in Spain both in social networks and in the media, evoking the theme, which became a trending topic . [ 7 ] They even made parodies of the lyrics and eventual responses to the letter of the song. [ 8 ]

Versions

The song has been covered by the groups Amaral , Siniestro Total , Oysterband and Nomadi , the latter in English and Italian respectively. [ 9 ]

30th anniversary

Coinciding with the pandemic of COVID-19 , Valladolid band released a new version along with other renowned artists under the name Celtic Short & Friends in which adapted the lyrics to celebrate its 30th anniversary and whose benefits would be earmarked for charitable purposes. [ 10 ]
