The 3rd German Bundestag existed between October 15, 1957 [1] and October 15, 1961. [2] In total, the 3rd German Bundestag held 168 sessions, with the last meeting on August 22, 1961. [3] The third parliament was constituted by the general election in 1957 , which took place on 15 September 1957th

The senior president was Marie Elisabeth Lüders of the FDP for the MP Konrad Adenauer ( CDU ), who as Federal Chancellor did not want to exercise the dignity of senior president.

On October 22, 1957, the 3rd Bundestag elected Konrad Adenauer with 274 (+8) yes-votes, 193 (+13) no-votes, and 9 abstentions in the first ballot for Federal Chancellor. [4]

A total of 519 seats

At the beginning and at the end of the legislative period, the 3rd Bundestag had a total of 497 members (+22 Berlin members of the Bundestag ). The CDU / CSU had the highest share of seats with 270 (+7) seats (end: 289), followed by the SPD with 169 (+12) seats (end: 180). In addition, the FDP (41 + 2 seats, 45 seats at the end), the DP (17 seats, 0 seats at the end) and the FDV were represented in the 3rd Bundestag with a Berlin representative (without voting rights). Due to the resignation of MPs, there were at times a total of 5 non-attached MPs .

In the first session, Eugen Gerstenmaier was re-elected President of the Bundestag with 437 votes in favor, 54 abstentions and 3 invalid votes.



A total of 613 legislative initiatives were introduced in the Bundestag, 401 of which are based on government proposals, 5 on initiatives by the Bundesrat and 207 on initiatives by the Bundestag. A total of 424 laws were passed by the Bundestag during the 3rd legislative period.
