Andrés Bernal [ 1 ] or Andrés Bernáldez , ( Fuentes de León , Badajoz , around 1450 - Los Palacios y Villafranca , 1513), known as the priest of the Palaces , was a Spanish ecclesiastic and historian.
In his Historia de los Reyes Católicos Don Fernando and Doña Isabel collect important aspects of Castile at the end of the 15th century: the War of Granada , the expulsion of the Jews and the vicissitudes of Christopher Columbus (of whom he collects having been a personal friend, having stayed several times at his house in Los Palacios and Villafranca, and worked on testimonies and documents provided by himself first-hand, being one of the sources that most clearly reflects his Genoese origin ).
His remains are believed to be buried in the Parroquia Mayor de Santa María la Blanca in the Sevillian town of Los Palacios y Villafranca, where he held his parish office. In this Parish, its parish books are the oldest that are preserved.
He wrote about the converts: "E commonly for the most part they were successful people and of many arts and deceptions, because they all lived by comfortable trades, and in buying and selling they had no conscience towards Christians. They never wanted to take up plowing or plowing trades. to dig, nor to walk through the fields raising cattle, nor would they teach it to their fixed, except for village trades, and to be settled earning from eating with little work ". - The Bernal form is the one that appears in the only archival document that mentions this priest and therefore should be the preferred one. However, since the 16th century the use of the Bernáldez form has spread. Gil, Juan (1986). "News of Andrés Bernal, priest of the palaces". Columbian themes .
