After graduating from high school , he volunteered at the “Vaihinger Kreiszeitung / Stuttgarter Nachrichten ”, and worked as an editor and presenter for the Heilbronner Voice local television test. In 1986 he switched to the TV editorial team “Landesschau” at SDR in Stuttgart. There he worked as a reporter, author and CvD for the programs Landesschau , Abendschau , Report from Stuttgart, Treffpunkt as well as for deliveries to the news programs for Erste , Tagesschau , Tagesthemen , ARD-Mittagsmagazin and ARD-Morgenmagazin. In 1991 he initially reported as a reporter from the ARD studio in Johannesburg (South Africa) with responsibility for Southern Africa, whose permanent correspondent and head he was from August 1991 to November 1994.
From December 1994 to December 1999 he headed the ARD studio in Cairo (Egypt), responsible for the Arab world. Since January 2000 and until today he has been permanently employed at the NDR in Hamburg, initially as an author and editor for the ARD political magazine Panorama .
In 2001 he took over the management of the international department and in May 2004 he was elected editor-in-chief for television and head of the NDR's current affairs department. In addition, he has been deputy program director since 2006. Cichowicz has been one of the four moderators of the ARD international magazine Weltspiegel since May 2000 .
In 2002, he received the Grimme Prize together with several colleagues involved for the ARD documentary The Death Pilots. In 2005 and 2009 he was nominated for the German TV Prize as the presenter of the programs Wahlarena together with co-presenter Jörg Schönenborn . In 2011 he and Jörg Schönenborn received the RIAS TV Prize for The Long Obama Night - Half Time for the President. For two other documentaries ( The Bushs - an American dynasty and The Lipobay disaster - billions lawsuit against Bayer ), for which he was responsible as editor, there was also the RIAS television award in 2005 and 2003.
In 1988 Cichowicz received a 6-week scholarship from the “Journalistes en Europe” foundation in Paris (France) and in 2002 a 3-week scholarship from the US State Department as part of the “International Exchange” program. He was a member of the “German-Arab Dialogue” of the Institute for Foreign Relations in Stuttgart and the “German-Chinese Media Forum” and is currently a member of the “Media Forum China-Germany-USA” of the Robert Bosch Foundation. He is also a member of the Board of Trustees of the GIGA German Institute of Global and Area Studies (based in Hamburg, member of the Leibniz Association). Cichowicz has moderated numerous panels and discussions on journalistic issues, human rights, development and foreign policy.
In 1987 he received the "Prix Choucroute".
