exA-Arcadia ( Japanese : エ ク サ ・ ア ル カ デ ィ ア, Hepburn : Ekusa Arukadia ) [ 2 ] is a motherboard system for arcade machines developed by the company exA-Arcadia PTE. LTD. , debuting in Japan on November 27, 2019.
Qualified by its creators as an attempt to "return video games to the Arcade", the board is characterized by not having regional blockage through internet connections and an international distribution mentality, unlike the competition during the 2010s that only works within Japan as NESiCAxLive of Taito or ALL.Net P-ras of Sega [ 3 ] .
Its hardware is based on architecture PC using base operating system Windows and through the use of cartridges. This Neo Geo- inspired hardware supports up to four interchangeable cartridges at the same time, so the user has the option to choose the game to their liking through a User Interface [ 4 ] .
History
During the 2000s the Arcade market industry took a sharp decline , which ended up almost entirely cutting off the production of new games outside of Japan with very specific exceptions. During this process, the Japanese arcade industry jumped from creating proprietary hardware to using generic PC architecture, with boards such as Type-X or Bemani PC . Although at first these games could be purchased outside of Japan, over the years several companies applied security systems with internet connection and digital distribution rental services that only work within Japan, without any possibility of power acquire these games outside the country legally.
ExA-Arcadia was born as a project in 2017 created by Eric "ShouTime" Chang [ 5 ] , collector of recreational plates [ 6 ] and known for participating in the creation and distribution of various ROM images for MAME , as well as for participating in various instances of the Evolution Championship Series fighting game tournament . One of his main points of philosophy was to re-distribute a recreational board internationally, without this type of blockage and with support to the global independent industry . ExA-Arcadia was publicly revealed at the 2018 JAEPO event [4 ] . The jingle for the logo was composed by Manabu Namiki [ 7 ] .
On November 27, 2019 exA-Arcadia debuted on the Japanese market with its first game, Aka to Blue Type Revolution , a Shoot 'em up developed by the Tanoshimasu company . The launch of the board at the international level was delayed without an exact date for 2020, in exchange Aka to Blue Type Revolution will receive an international version with corrected bugs and extra additions [ 8 ] . The exa-Arcadia international pre-sale price is S $ 3,549 , as the board is manufactured in SINGAP [ 9 ] .
On April 15, 2020, video game news outlet Famitsu confirmed that the entire first run of exA-Arcadia units for the Japanese market were sold and that they would reveal more than 25 titles by the end of the year. [ 10 ]
