The air base was completely completed in 1938. A provisional flight operation took place beforehand. The runway was grassy. In the southwest of the air base there were barracks and flight control. In the west within the forest there were barracks for accommodation. An Air Force flight school for twin-engine aircraft was housed here as early as 1936. By 1945, various pilot schools took turns occupying the space. The first active flying unit was the III. Jagdgeschwader 4 group , stationed with their Messerschmitt Bf 109 G / K.
The following table shows a list of all active flying units (excluding school and supplementary units) of the Luftwaffe that were stationed here between 1938 and 1945.

After the end of the Second World War, the airfield initially remained unused until the air forces of the National People's Army took it over. After the renovation work in 1967, including paving the runway, it was to be regarded as a full-fledged airfield. However, it only had a simple infrastructure with a few buildings and a few aircraft parking spaces, and the area was not fenced. The place served as decentralization airfield of the fighter squadron 1 "Fritz Schmenkel" . After the dissolution of the National People's Army in 1990 no operations took place. Up until 2009, the MZA Luckau held motorsport events on this site. After aTemporary use as storage space for wind turbines built the Wirsol Solar AG in early 2012 on the eastern part of the runway a solar park with 21 MWp peak power.
