On May 15, 1997, a Yakovlev Jak-40 crashed on a training flight operated by Azerbaijan Airlines , killing all six occupants.

Plane and crew

The plane was a 22 year old Yakovlev Yak-40 with the air vehicle registration 4K-87504, the three turbofan engines of the type Ivchenko AI-25 was equipped.

The crew consisted of a flight captain , three first officers , a flight engineer and a check captain.

The pilots completed a total of four performance test flights that day; three of these were completed and one involved a go- around maneuver . On approach, the Jak-40 flew over an area in which Azerbaijani soldiers, who were on their way back to their camp after a target practice , shot street signs with their machine guns for entertainment . As the Jak-40 made a right turn, a soldier shot at a sign pointing in the direction of the passing aircraft. Missile shots hit the left side and damaged a pressurized oxygen tank (two bullet holes were found in the area). As a result, a fire broke out, which quickly hit the passenger cabin and theTail assaulted. When attempting an emergency landing , the Jak-40 went into a dive after the longitudinal control had been destroyed or the pilots had become incapacitated by the heat and inhaled combustion products. The aircraft finally hit an undeveloped area in Gəncə, 5,160 m from the runway threshold, at 13:05 h with a bank angle of 70 ° and burned out.
