The accident at the Vockerode power plant occurred on July 22nd, 1960. On this day, an Ilyushin Il-14P of the Air Force of the National People's Army had an accident after it collided with a chimney of the Vockerode power plant . Seven people died in the incident.
The affected machine was an Il-14P (T) built in 1956 by VEB Flugzeugwerke Dresden with the serial number 14803004 , one of 80 Il- 14s built under license in the GDR. The machine had completed its maiden flight on December 27, 1956 with the test number DM-ZZG assigned five days earlier , with which ten further test flights were carried out by January 28, 1957 to check the technical components. On March 1, 1957, the machine was designated DM-UABapproved and carried out a control flight. The handover flight followed six days later, with representatives of the National People's Army (NVA) present. The delivery flight followed on March 11, 1957; The machine was put into operation by the NVA at the Transport Aviation School (TFS) based in Dessau with the tactical number 400 .
Inmates and flight plan
The machine started at Dessau Airport on a weather observation flight and was supposed to land there again. There were six crew members on board.
The machine took off at 7:30 a.m. in Dessau. Although the weather conditions deteriorated noticeably, the captain decided to conduct the flight according to visual flight rules below the cloud cover instead of letting the aircraft climb in instrument flight . At 7:40 a.m., the machine collided with one of the 140-meter-high chimneys of the Vockerode power plant. The right wing hit the chimney no. 1, while the left wing was torn off as a result of the sudden braking of the machine by the impact. The machine fell to the ground on the power plant site. All six inmates as well as a scaffolding worker of the power plant on the ground were killed in the incident.
An aircraft engine from the machine was exhibited in the power plant's machine hall in 1999.
