Javier Velaza Frías (Castejón, Navarra, 1963) is a classical philologist, poet and Spanish writer.
He received a doctorate in Classical Philology from the UAB in 1990 and in 1991 he moved to the University of Barcelona, where he is a professor of Latin Philology. Since 2017 he is Dean of the Faculty of Philology of the University of Barcelona.
He is a specialist in Roman epigraphy, Paleo-Hispanic languages, classical literature and transmission of texts, among other topics. He has published twenty books and more than two hundred articles in international publishers and magazines. [ 1 ] He has directed several research projects and team networks and has organized international scientific conferences and meetings. He is part of the publishers guild of the Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum II 2 and is the editor of the Monumenta Linguarum Hispanicarum. He is principal investigator of the Littera Research Group (Laboratory for the investigation and treatment of Roman and ancient epigraphic texts) and researcher of the Hesperia project. [ 2] In 2003 he received the Research Distinction of the Generalitat of Catalonia and since 2014 he is a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute.
As a poet, he has published Mal de amores y latines (Àngel Urrutia Prize, Pamplona 1996), De un dios fisoño (José Hierro Prize, San Sebastián de los Reyes 1998), Los arrancados (Lumen, Barcelona 2002) and Enveses (Valencia Prize, Hyperión , Madrid 2018). [ 3 ] . In 2020 he won the XXXIII Tiflos Poetry Prize of the ONCE for his work De mudanzas . [ 4 ]
He regularly collaborates as a literary, classical music and opera critic in various media.
