Life

Jaybo aka Monk

Jaybo aka Monk was born in Paris in 1963 . At the age of 14 he left home to live on the streets of Paris and Toulouse for the next few years . There he came into contact with the street art culture, in which he became increasingly involved. [1] In the following years he worked among others as a street actor and rapped as part of the hip-hop crew Reality Brothers . [2]

After moving to Berlin in 1986 , he co-founded the Style and the Family Tunes magazine in the early 1990s , which deals with topics related to music, fashion and cultural events. [3] In addition, he called 1994 the streetwear label Irie Daily to life, where he is now chief designer. [4]

In 2006 his first monograph, Lord of Mess, was published. My Head is a Visual Township by Gestalten Verlag . [5] His work adorns, for example, an album cover of the Berlin reggae / dancehall combo Seeed . [6]

Work

Jaybo, Olympic Antilope, 2012, sculpture made from various antique sports objects, 940 × 700 cm

Jaybo uses different materials in his art. His works range from painting on canvas to cigarette packets or Coke cans as image carriers [7] to a light projection of his work New Wave at the Berlin Cathedral. [8th]

In his works he uses as Walt Disney motifs such as Mickey Mouse to [9] or "taking the self-portraits of Francis Bacon in bold adaptation " with his work Self - Portraits on " our staging cravings [...] in front of the bathroom mirror [...] or on self-promotion platforms such asFacebook ”. [10]

I want to be an all around artist because for me, art has nothing to do with techniques or style, art is something I need to breathe and to be free.[11]
I want to be an artist through and through, because for me art has nothing to do with techniques or a certain style, it is something that I need to breathe and be free. "
