Jörg Maier - Jörg Maier

Jörg Maier (* 1940 in Ulm ) is a German geographer and economist . He has been a professor since 1977 and held the chair for economic geography and regional planning at the University of Bayreuth until 2008 .

Professional background

From 1960 to 1964 Maier studied economics and law at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich (LMU), where he passed his exams in December 1964. In 1965 he temporarily held an assistant position at the Institute for Economic Geography at the LMU. He then worked until 1967 as a research assistant in the Transport Department at the Ifo Institute for Economic Research . He then returned to LMU under Professor Karl Ruppert , where he received a Dr. oec. publ. doctorate and to 1973 as Senior Researcher worked.

As a scholarship holder of the German Research Foundation , he completed his habilitation from 1973 to 1974 as Dr. rer. pole. habil. before he completed his habilitation in geography in 1975. Maier worked as a private lecturer until 1976 and then accepted a professorship at the Institute for Economic Geography at LMU.

From 1977 to 2008 Maier was a full university professor and holder of the chair for economic geography and regional planning at the University of Bayreuth.

Since then he has also been the editor of the working materials on spatial planning and spatial planning as well as co-editor of the Bayreuth geoscientific papers. Maier was and is a member of the nature conservation advisory board of the government of Upper Franconia , a member of the regional planning advisory board at the Bavarian State Ministry for Economic Affairs, Infrastructure, Transport and Technology , a member of the Society for Regional Structural Development at the German Chamber of Industry and Commerce and a member of the German Academy for Urban Development and Regional Planning .

Professor Maier retired on January 29, 2008 in the presence of numerous guests from politics and science, alumni and students . In his farewell lecture, which was entitled "Upper Franconia 1977 to 2017: Development Paths and Success Factors" , he addressed the changes in Upper Franconia as a business location and its prospects for the future. Freed from his daily duties, Maier will continue to hold courses at the University of Bayreuth. Maier will also complete the supervision of his diploma and doctoral students .


Jörg Maier is the recipient of the Bayreuth District Culture Prize , the Euregio Egrensis Science Prize , the Golden Plaque of the University of Maribor and the European Medal of the European Parliament . He is also an honorary doctor from the Universities of Pécs (Hungary) and Pilsen (Czech Republic).
