WWE (for legal purposes, World Wrestling Entertainment, Inc. ) is an American media and entertainment company, [ 6 ] [ 7 ] composed mainly of the area of professional wrestling . WWE has also branched out into other fields, including film and football , among various other businesses .
Its owner, administrator and CEO is Vince McMahon , who owns approximately 70% of the shares of the company, whose shares are listed on the New York Stock Exchange . Its headquarters are in Connecticut , with administrative offices in Los Angeles , New York , London and Toronto . It is the largest wrestling promotion in the world, being viewed in over 150 countries, while its recordings constitute a significant percentage of the complete visual history of world wrestling. [ 8 ] The industry WWE's paramount is professional wrestling.
WWE shows are not legitimate contests, but purely entertainment-based, with matches scripted by scripts and choreography, although moves are often included that can put wrestlers at risk of injury if not performed correctly. This was first publicly acknowledged by WWE owner Vince McMahon in 1989 to avoid athletic commission taxes. Since the 1980s , WWE has publicly branded its product sports entertainment , acknowledging the product's roots in competitive sports and dramatic theater. WWE has also bought and absorbed its main rivals such as World Championship Wrestling (WCW) andExtreme Championship Wrestling (ECW).
The majority owner of the WWE company is its president and CEO Vince McMahon along with his wife Linda , his children Shane and Stephanie , and also his son-in-law Paul Levesque (Triple H) . The McMahon family owns approximately 70% of the WWE capital and 95% of the voting power.
World Wrestling Federation (1950-2002)
Roderick James "Jess" McMahon was a boxing promoter whose greatest accomplishments included promoting a show between Jess Willard and Jack Johnson in 1913 . Ten years after the above in 1923 , and while working with promoter Tex Rickard (who despised wrestling to such an extent that he prevented wrestling matches from being held at Madison Square Garden ), Roderick began promoting performances of boxing at the Garden, located in Manhattan, New York . The first contest under his promotion was for the lightweight championship between Jack Delaneyand Paul Berlenbach . One of the venues where the first performances began to be held was Madison Square Garden in New York . During that time, professional wrestler Joseph Raymond "Toots" Mondt conceived a revolutionary project. In addition, Toots Mondt had the idea to make it even more exciting with his concept of "Western Slam Bang-style wrestling" (radical body movements). From now on, he would form his own promotion with Ed Lewis and Billy Sandow. Together, they convinced many fighters to sign contracts with the new company called Gold Dust Trio.. However, the company was later dissolved after a disagreement about its management. Because of this, Mondt teamed up with various wrestling promoters; he knew very well that the New York fight would have to be handled differently from the original concept. His next project would be supported by various figures from the show, including Roderick McMahon.
With Roderick, Mondt created the company World Wrestling Entertainment (by its acronym , WWE) based in Washington DC and New York. Although almost no one had information about WWE, in 1951 she became famous after joining the National Wrestling Alliance . The initial functions of WWE were conducted by Antonino Rocca , who would later become a wrestler for the same company. However, Rocca was not entirely satisfied with the organization's performance. That same year, one of Mondt's associates announced Vincent J. McMahonas his father's successor, during WWE's expansion stage as a member of the NWA (Mondt and Roderick's company began to control the entire wrestling circuit in the northern region of the United States ).
Combining perfectly, Vincent J. and Mondt managed to acquire an approximate 70% of the NWA , a significant figure compared to an organization such as the Alianza Nacional de Lucha Libre. Soon after, Mondt taught Vince J. how to work properly in the wrestling industry, and by campaign proposals. In early 1961, the World Wide Wrestling Federation consisted of McMahon and Mondt, following a dispute with NWA (National Wrestling Alliance) with "Nature Boy".
The Golden Age (1985-1993)
In 1977-1978 Vincent K. McMahon founded Titan Sports, Inc. and in 1980 he purchased the World Wide Wrestling Federation from his father, Vincent J. McMahon . Since the 12 - year-old Vince became involved in the business of wrestling until his father decided to retire. The latter had already established the Northeast Territory as one of the NWA's most recognized and energetic members by recognizing that professional wrestling was more entertainment than sport . Against his father's wishes, McMahon began a processexpansion that would fundamentally change the sport , and that would put WWE — and his own life in danger.
Leaving the NWA for the second time, which in itself was not a big step; the AWA had long since ceased to be an official member of the NWA , and a decade before the WWE had rejoined the NWA . But in none of the circumstances had the separate member attempted to destroy the National Wrestling Alliance territory system , which had been the foundation of the industry.
Other promoters were angered when McMahon began syndicating WWE events to television stations around the United States , in areas outside of WWE's traditional territory (the Northeast). McMahon also began selling videotapes of WWE events outside of the Northeast through his distribution company Coliseum Video . It effectively broke with the "unprecedented" law of regionalism, around which the industry was based. To make matters worse, McMahonhe used the revenue generated from advertising, television deals, and tape sales to steal talent from rival promoters. Wrestling promoters around the nation were now in direct competition with WWE.
According to various reports, Vince Sr. warned his son that if he continued with his actions he would end up dead. However, despite this warning, young McMahon had a greater ambition: WWE would move around the nation. However, such action required a great deal of capital investment; one that could put WWE on the sidelines of financial collapse.
The future, not just of the Vincent K. McMahon experiment , but of the WWF, the NWA , and the industry as a whole would be determined by the success or failure of McMahon's new sports entertainment concept, Wrestlemania . Wrestlemania was a pay-per-view event that Vincent K. McMahon marketed as the Super Bowl of professional wrestling.
The concept of a wrestling super card was not new in North America; the NWA had been running Starrcade for several years before WrestleMania , and even old man Vincent K. McMahon had marketed large billboards at Shea Stadium in New York broadcast on closed circuit in various places. However, McMahon wanted to bring the WWF to the mainstream channels, shocking the general public who were not regular fans of wrestling. He garnered mainstream media interest by inviting celebrities such as Mr. T and Cyndi Lauper to participate in the event. MTV, in particular, had a lot of WWE coverage and programming right now, in what was called the Rock 'n' Wrestling Connection . The new formula for what McMahon called Sports Entertainment was a resounding financial success at the original WrestleMania . For several years after the event, WWE achieved great financial success under the leadership of McMahon and his American "hero", Hulk Hogan , creating what some observers called the second golden age of professional wrestling. However, by the 1990s WWE's fortunes slowly declined, especially when fans simply got tired of Hulk Hogan and the extremely absurd angles.
The New Generation (1993-1997)
The WWF reached its lowest point when allegations of steroid abuse and distribution were made against McMahon and WWE in 1990 , coupled with allegations of sexual harassment by several of their employees. McMahon was eventually exonerated, but it was a public relations disaster for WWE. The steroid lawsuit is estimated to have cost WWF $ 5 million, and to make matters worse the company's revenues had dropped substantially compared to previous years. To compensate, McMahon cut pay for wrestlers and clerks - in certain cases the cut was as much as 40 percent. This fact helped many WWE wrestlers leave for theWCW between 1992 and 1994 , some of them, figures as great as Hulk Hogan .
With the debut of Ric Flair and coronation as world champion at the Royal Rumble on January 19, 1992, the hegemony of Hulk Hogan as WWE monarch ends and thanks to the creation of Monday Night Raw on December 7, 1993 begins a new vision of wrestling towards entertainment.
During this time, WWE began an advertising campaign called the " New Generation of WWF ". In contrast to the past, this era was led by Canadian Bret Hart , the most popular then, and by wrestlers such as The Undertaker , Shawn Michaels , The British Bulldog , Owen Hart , Diesel and Razor Ramón . However, WWE's popularity would begin to wane in 1995 , a period in which Diesel was WWE Champion shortly after the 1994 Survivor Series event until the 1995 Survivor Series event.. This gave the opportunity to its main competitor, World Championship Wrestling (WCW), to take advantage of the situation (in what is known as Monday Night Wars or Monday Night Wars ) and, while the popularity of WWE declined , WCW's was going up.
In 1994 , the WWF began to use stories and angles for a more adult audience, acquiring the category of only suitable for adults, in an attempt to compete and level its situation more before the World Championship Wrestling (WCW) this would give rise to its second golden age, The Attitude Era .
Under Eric Bischoff , World Championship Wrestling (WCW) began using the tremendous financial resources of its owner, Ted Turner , to attract established talent to WWE. Beginning in 1992 , these acquisitions included Hulk Hogan , "Macho Man" Randy Savage , Lex Luger , Scott Hall , Kevin Nash, and many others. In 1995 , Bischoff upped his bet by creating WCW Monday Nitro , a cable show on Turner's TNT channel., to compete directly with the main WWEs program that was long before, WWF Monday Night Raw . Eventually, on the strength of its new talents acquired from WWE and the groundbreaking history of the New World Order , WCW surpassed WWE in viewership and popularity.
The Era Attitude (1997-2002)
The WWF / WCW rivalry reached a new level in 1995 , when McMahon decided to force the then WWF Champion , Bret Hart , whom he left the company. The year before, Hart was offered a lucrative offer to jump into WCW . McMahon struck back with an offer that was worth much less money, but for a 20-year term and a position with the company after he retired, so Hart agreed to stay. However, McMahon immediately regretted the agreement, so after a year he told him that he could not fulfill it and that it would be best if he went to WCW.
However, McMahon's fear is that he would leave while he was WWF Champion, as years prior, WWF Women's Champion Alundra Blayze signed with WCW while possessing the belt and threw it in a garbage can at WCW Nitro. , so the WWF did not want a similar episode to happen. Bret promised that such a thing would never happen and made an agreement that the announcement of his departure would be delayed until the belt could be passed on to a new champion. However, McMahon was concerned that the news would leak and looked for a way in which he could take the title from Hart before the deal was announced on WCW Monday Nitro.
However, Hart had a problem with Shawn Michaels , the man who was going to take the title from him at his last WWE event, the Survior Series . Hart used a creative control clause on his character so as not to lose him to Michaels in his native Canada . During the match, Michaels put Hart on his own finisher, the Sharpshooter , but the referee, Earl Hebner , following Vince McMahon's instructions, ordered the bell to be rung to end the match and announce Michaels as the winner, despite that Hart never gave up.
McMahon used the aftermath of the event to create a character who would go on to become the evil owner of the company, "Mr. McMahon", on WWE shows. This character was characterized as a dictator who favored fighters who were "good for business" over those who were "troublesome" like Stone Cold Steve Austin . This led to the Austin vs. McMahon, which was the cornerstone of the new Attitude Era concept .
Continuing the inertia brought on by the Montreal betrayal, McMahon, along with his chief writer Vince Russo , moved the WWF in a more reality-based direction called WWF Attitude , changing the company's corporate logo in the process. Borrowing several of the exciting stories and styles of wrestling from the then-insurgent ECW wrestling promotion, the WWF Attitude Era was largely based on the growing popularity of wrestler Stone Cold Steve Austin. Popular with fans since winning the King of the Ring tournament as Heel in 1996, Austin's style won enough fans to the point that the WWF was forced to make him a fan favorite at Wrestlemania 13.during the spring of 1997 (in a rare exchange, in which Bret Hart became Heel and Steve Austin became Face after the legendary fight between the two fighters). During the summer and fall of 1997, Austin increased his status as a rebel who was willing to challenge any authority by executing his Stone Cold Stunner on WWF announcer Jim Ross , also then Commissioner Sgt. Slaughter , and eventually the owner of the WWF Vince McMahon. The Austin-McMahon rivalry began after Stone Cold won the 1998 Royal Rumble to become the # 1 challenger for the WWF Championship at Wrestlemania.. McMahon told a pre-Wrestlemania press conference that it was not in the best interests of the WWF for Austin to be champion. The relationship would deteriorate over the next several years in WWF programming.
The Attitude era fully began at Wrestlemania XIV , when professional boxer Mike Tyson appeared as a special guest for the WWF Title fight between the two most popular fighters of the moment Shawn Michaels and Stone Cold Steve Austin. Michaels as Heel was the leader of DX and WWF champion , with all this Michaels carried a serious injury since the Royal Rumble (1998) and Austin as a favorite of the fans and winner of the last two editions of the Royal Rumble. The climactic moment occurred when a verbal confrontation between Austin and Tyson ended with the fighter insulting the boxer. The match culminated in a Stone Cold Stunner from Austin, winning the title and Tyson betraying and knocking out Michaels who was friendly with him. Fans who bought the pay-per-view were amazed to see what happened; this was definitely not the era of children's Rock and Wrestling they still expected from the WWF. Many more fans who didn't buy Wrestlemania , including WCW fans , tuned in to RAW the next day and in subsequent weeks. This was the beginning of epic rivalries between the "evil promoter" Mr. McMahon and Austin. For the first time in 18 months, the WWF would beatWCW Monday Nitro in the audience index.
Although in late 1997 and early 1998 the WWF lost its two biggest superstars of previous years, Bret Hart for the betrayal of Montreal and Shawn Michaels from Wrestlemania XIV for an injury suffered at the Royal Rumble (1998) for the following year , the WWF would see new fan favorites. The Rock would go on to become one of the most famous professional wrestlers in history. Mick Foley , then known as Mankind, would become one of the most adored figures in the fight after an unforgettable fight in a Hell in a Cell at the King of the Ring in 1998. D-Generation X , directed byTriple H , became the most popular team on television, thus replacing the New World Order . While the WCW vs New World Order plotline had managed to almost bring the WWF into financial ruin, it was now becoming stale, and fans returned to WWE drawn by Austin's popularity and the badass nature of the programming. television.
This change was not without criticism. Many family groups were upset with the graphic violence used by the WWF. They, along with feminist groups, found the regular use of women to attract viewers offensive. One group, the Parents Television Council , boycotted WWE. However, the controversial new presentation appealed more to WWE core fans. This group was ridiculed in 1998 by the Right To Censor group, led by Steven Richards , and with the participation of Bull Buchanan , The Godfather , Val Venis and Ivory .
The tragedy came on May 23, 1999, in Kansas City (Missouri) . Owen Hart , under his superhero persona "Blue Blazer," was supposed to appear dramatically on that night's Over The Edge pay-per-view , "flying" into the ring as he was lowered from the roof of the coliseum. As Hart was lowered into position in preparation for his entry, his restraints gave way, and he fell from a height of approximately 25 meters, crashing into the cornerback and then bouncing into the ring.
Those who were watching the pay-per-view on television did not get to observe Hart's death because the director had put on a pre-recorded interview just before the accident happened. Hart was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving. A very affected Jim Ross made the announcement to the television audience once the news reached the coliseum. Fans inside the Kemper Arena were not informed of Owen's death. The decision to continue the event was - and still is - highly controversial.
The following night, the WWF dedicated its Raw is War program to the memory of Owen, which was called Raw is Owen, while several WWF wrestlers and employees shared memories about their friend.
The 1999 Over the Edge event was never converted to video or DVD due to Hart's death. In addition, many "Blue Blazer" figures were removed from the market. His brother, Bret, who already had a bad relationship with Vince McMahon due to Montreal's betrayal, began to verbally attack him and blamed him for Owen's death.
The 25 as March as 1999 , the WWF launched a special program known as SmackDown! on the UPN string . The program became a weekly series on July 28, 1999. It has remained the most successful program since then on the UPN.
In conjunction with the success of the Attitude era, on September 27, 1999, WWF's parent company, World Wrestling Federation Entertainment, Inc., became a public company on the stock exchange, offering 10 million shares at $ 17. each. The WWF announced its interest in diversifying into other businesses, including a Times Square nightclub, film production and book publishing.
Although the WWF lost Stone Cold Steve Austin , due to various injuries, they continued as a dominant figure in the ratings, and in turn became a popular sensation, due to The Rock's rise as a popular culture icon. (and movie actor), and the development of Triple H , as a star figure. WCW's movement of talent into the WWF, including such figures as The Big Show , Chris Jericho , Chris Benoit , and Eddie Guerrero , helped enhance the talent in its ranks, thus killing any chance that WCW would once again become a serious threat. Writer-in-chief Vince Russo and his assistantEd Ferrara were among the last talent groups to leave the company in 1997 to get jobs with WCW. They were replaced by the late Chris Kreski , known for his ability to maintain continuity in stories.
In 1997 the WWF, in collaboration with the television network NBC , announced the creation of the XFL , a new professional football league. But the league had a lousy viewership and NBC took it off the air after a year.
On January 3, 1999, Jim Ross confirmed in the "Ross Report" that several wrestlers from the Extreme Championship Wrestling company had been hired by the WWF. It was then revealed that Jerry Lynn and World Champion Rhyno made verbal agreements, while Justin Credible and Bobby Eaton signed their respective contracts on January 24, 1999. Eaton was assigned talent development within the Memphis Championship Wrestling territory. .
Soon after, Paul Heyman (who is currently the manager of superstar Brock Lesnar) made his commentary debut on RAW (after Jerry Lawler temporarily left the company due to problems with his wife Stacy Carter , better known as The Kat. ), Tazz , on the other hand, was moved to the commentary role as well, but on the SmackDown! . ECW (the original company) went bankrupt in April of that year.
With the massive success of WWF Attitude, WCW's financial situation deteriorated significantly, and its new parent company AOL Time Warner was looking to divest itself of the division. In March of the 2001 , WWF Entertainment, Inc. acquired WCW from AOL Time Warner for US $ 7 million. During the last WCW Monday Nitro transmission, McMahon (under the character of Mr. McMahon) assumed control of the program, during the last half hour and Monday Night Raw, it was broadcast for the first time on TNT. Months later, McMahon and Bischoff reconciled their personal differences, and Bischoff signed with WWE to play the General Manager of RAW.
From the height of WCW in the late 1988s, wrestling fans dreamed of a feud between the two federations. The original plan was for WCW to "take over" RAW, changing it back to WCW Monday Nitro. However, many WCW big stars such as "Hollywood" Hulk Hogan , Lex Luger , Kevin Nash , Goldberg , and Sting still had contracts with the old WCW parent company (McMahon decided not to buy them), and they all decided to wait for the duration of their contracts, instead of going to work with McMahon, for a lot less money.
World Wrestling Entertainment (2002-presente)
Ruthless Agression (2002-2008)
Due to a lawsuit from the World Wildlife Fund (also WWF), the company changed its name to World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). Its parent company, World Wrestling Federation Entertainment, also adopted this name. The lawsuit was due to the wrestling company violating an agreement with the Fund on the use of the initials "WWF" in the United Kingdom.. Rather than trying to reach a financial agreement with the Fund, McMahon changed the name of the company. The logo was altered and an ad campaign called "Get The F Out" was used to promote change. In addition, all visual and verbal references to "WWF" and the World Wrestling Federation logo from the "Attitude" era were edited in the old archives. This era was called as WWE Ruthless Agression .
When rookie Brock Lesnar , current client of Paul Heyman, defeats the face and WWE champion, The Rock on August 25, 2002 begins a new generation of fighters, who would mark the rebirth of the company, supported by new talents. from their OVW and FCW development territories such as John Cena , Randy Orton and Batista . In addition, this stage was characterized by the uprising of those who were main figures in WCW such as Big Show , Chris Benoit , Booker T , among others, and the popularization of secondary stars of the same company such as Edge, Eddie Guerrero , Rey Mysterio , among others.
Without competition from WCW and Brock Lesnar's outright refusal to defend his title on Raw , WWE decided to break the promotion into two "separate" brands based on its two main television shows, RAW and SmackDown! . Under this "divided brands" agreement, each brand had a separate staff, had exclusive championships to the brand, and are led by different general managers, which have been changed several times. In June 2003, WWE began alternating pay-per-view events between brands, RAW hosting one month, SmackDown the next, and so on. Both brands come together to co-host the four original WWE pay-per-view events: Royal Rumble ,WrestleMania, Summerslam y Survivor Series.
Smackdown became an emulation of the defunct WCW , sharing the concept and schedule with surgiente TNA for the expansion marks the titles were taken WCW World Heavyweight Championship and WCW United States Championship as well as different titles in pairs and storylines for each brand. Smackdown fighters have secondary roles compared to Raw, as main fighters.
In 2005, WWE began a "Legends" program, thus continuing the tradition of inducting new members into the WWE Hall of Fame during WrestleMania weekend. This has allowed them to work with legends such as "Rowdy" Roddy Piper and Superstar Billy Graham to create merchandise such as clothing, figures, titles, video games, and DVDs. The Legends program began informally with the introduction of WWE 24/7, WWE's "on-demand" service, and the hit Ric Flair retrospective DVD. Later this year, superstars such as Dusty Rhodes , Big Van Vader and Jake "The Snake" Roberts were added to the roster .
The 26 of maypole of 2006 , WWE revived Extreme Championship Wrestling as the third brand of the company, issuing the program chain Sci Fi , initially with the original extremist idea of ECW but later acquiring the concept of preparing rookies , filling the bouts with regular or unknown fighters and establishing as champions mid-range fighters in need of a push or boost. This caused the show's ratings to decline, leading to its closure and the development of the idea of nurturing new talent with its successor show, NXT .
A new tragedy impacted WWE in those years when Chris Benoit , a Canadian professional wrestler who fought in the company since 2000, was found dead on June 25 , 2007 at his home with his family. The police investigation concluded that Chris Benoit had murdered his family (made up of his wife, also the professional wrestler - now retired - Nancy Benoit who wrestled in WCW under the ring name Womanand his seven-year-old son, Daniel) to later take his own life, hanging himself with a cable from a weight-lifting machine. In response to the shock, which caused the tragedy, WWE withdrew everything related to him from his company and he would never be mentioned again, on TV programs, nor would his face appear in video files. However, in 2014 Chris Benoit would be mentioned again by WWE, displaying a warning in the scenes in which he appears.
Era PG (2008-2020)
The 26 as September as 2007 , it was announced that WWE would expand its international operations. Alongside the current international offices in London and Toronto, a new international office was established in Sydney . On January 21, 2008, WWE made the transition to High Definition . All television and pay-per-view programs were subsequently broadcast in this format. In addition, WWE also introduced a new scenery which is used for all three brands. In mid-2008, it was announced that the company's programs would focus on a family environment, changing their rating from TV-14 to TV-PG.. In part of 2007, billionaire Donald Trump ruled WWE because of the loss of a bet from Mr. McMahon.
On November 19, 2008, World Wrestling Entertainment launched its online social network, WWE Universe which appeared in April. Similar to MySpace , it offers blogs, forums, and other features for WWE fans. The 30 of December of 2010 , through a press release that it would close soon WWE Universe, closing the 1 of January of 2011. On January 9, 2009, WWE announced that it was cutting 10% of its overall staffing as part of an effort to cut $ 20 million in costs. The layoffs include wrestlers on the official roster, an unknown number of agents and producers, and four umpires. It also closed its offices in Asia and Australia. Among those laid off were the likes of Val Venis , Ron Simmons , D'Lo Brown , Sgt. Slaughter and Hardcore Holly .
On April 14, 2009 , WWE launched Superstars , a new program similar to WWE Tough Enough, in which matches were broadcast that were recorded on RAW , SmackDown! and ECW , fighting primarily, wrestlers who were not featured on the other shows. In addition, due to the discontent of the Sy Fy network with the program ECW on Sy Fy , WWE chose to close the brand, announcing it on February 2 , 2010 and broadcasting the last episode on February 16 , creating the WWE a program called NXT , which had a Reality Show format, where the main panel fighters will help the FCW youth to get on the main panel by posing as their coaches, however due to the low audience the show went off the air, (except in Latin America) and is still broadcast on the page WWE website. As of June 20, 2012 NXT became a brand like Raw and SmackDown! only conformed with fighters from the FCW , as a lower division.
Despite the little success of the ECW , great fighters such as CM Punk , John Morrison , Kofi Kingston , The Miz , Sheamus and Jack Swagger among others emerged , who would make up a new generation of fighters together with the NXT generation. On June 1, 2010, Wade Barrett was proclaimed the winner of the first season of NXT . On June 7 on Raw , he would debut by interfering in a match between John Cena and CM Punk., along with the rest of the competitors of that season, dismantling the ring and attacking the commentators. [ 9 ] All five seasons saw great fighters who went on to become big names. The third season was carried out especially with women, where the great protagonist AJ Lee , despite not winning said season, would become a great diva in the star staff of WWE, reaching the Divas Championship with a record of 295 days with the title (although being surpassed two years later by Nikki Bella with 301 days) . Being one of the protagonists of the new generation of divas, after the last generation that disappeared afterWrestleMania XXVIII , starring with the new generation WrestleMania XXX and WrestleMania 31 , in that period the debutant Paige would arrive , having great matches both as partners and opponents, both getting to take off the championship on two occasions.
With five seasons of NXT, great fighters such as Ryback , King Barrett , Daniel Bryan and Bray Wyatt were seen , among the most prominent, they came on more than one occasion to become protagonists each week, such as the most prominent Daniel Bryan , arriving at WrestleMania XXX and defeating Triple H in a match, and in the main event defeating Randy Orton and Batista winning the WWE World Heavyweight Championship .
After the season format, the NXT evolved into a brand like Raw and SmackDown . Although NXT would be a brand like the others, it would only have new wrestlers on its staff, wrestlers from Florida Championship Wrestling and from the main staff, whose wrestlers need to improve their qualities in the ring. This brand would have exclusive championships such as the NXT Championship , the Couples Championship and the Women's Championship . In addition to the NXT, WWE would announce on January 3, 2011, the return of Tough Enough, to bring rookie fighters, out of the pros.
On July 18, 2011 it was announced that Paul "Triple H" Levesque had become the new executive vice president of WWE, ( kayfabe ), and created the "SuperShow Era" in which wrestlers could compete on both shows ( Smackdown and Raw ) becoming as before the division of brands, so the championships began to be available for both brands, and the WWE Draft stopped being held, because WWE officials saw it as unnecessary, thus ending the Trademark Extension . The WWE Saturday Morning Slam program was also created., broadcast on Saturday mornings with a TV-G rating (level lower than the usual TV-PG rating), because it is specifically aimed at children, it will not feature any violent movement due to its violent nature.
In 2011, the wrestler CM Punk made an improvised promo, where he pointed to the wrestler John Cena criticizing the opportunities that were given to him, calling himself the best fighter in the world, deserving more opportunities than Cena himself, even saying that the company would be better off if Vince McMahon were dead. At that time his microphone was cut off the air, and the show went into commercials. After his victory in Money in the Bank over John Cena, CM Punk would leave the company but would return to become champion again, after losing him to Alberto del Río . After being champion for more than 400 days, he would lose it to The Rock. But during his long reign, being the longest in the last 27 years, the group The Shield made up of Seth Rollins , Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose , NXT fighters who reached the main staff, would debut, all three becoming a new generation and different. Taking great rivalries against The Authority and Evolution as an example, the latter caused Rollins to betray his teammates, having opportunities by winning the Money in the Bank Briefcase, redeeming it at WrestleMania 31 winning the WWE World Heavyweight Championship , in a fight that was in progress betweenBrock Lesnar and Roman Reigns, being the first in history to achieve this feat. Then he put his title on the line against John Cena , and he put the United States Championship on the line at SummerSlam 2015 , leaving Rollins victorious, being the first in history to have the World Championship and the United States at the same time.
At the beginning of 2014, Paul Levesque contacted Steve Borden , a wrestler who had already received offers, to be a member of the WWE roster in previous years, rejecting all of them at the time. After many conversations, they reached an agreement to make the long-awaited debut at the Survivor Series event that year, Steve Borden better known as Sting , was known until then, as the fighter who never went to Vince McMahon's company. . He appeared as Face , attacking Triple H and losing the Authority team , which had Seth Rollins in its ranks.with whom later, Sting would face in Night of Champions. Since Survivor Series , Sting began his feud with Triple H being ended at WrestleMania 31 , an event that was held at Levi's Stadium in the city of Santa Clara, California and would raise 139 million dollars, in addition to 23.2 million in taxes, becoming in the highest grossing event in WWE history, to this day.
On July 13, 2015, Stephanie McMahon started a "revolution" in the Divas division, where 3 teams were formed, Team Bella ( Nikki Bella , Brie Bella and Alicia Fox ) who had formed on SmackDown on June 18. , Team PCB ( Paige , Charlotte and Becky Lynch ) and Team BAD ( Sasha Banks , Naomi and Tamina ). This led them to a Triple Threat Match at Battleground., who involved one member of each team. Sasha Banks represented Team BAD, Charlotte to Team PCB and Brie to Team Bella, in that fight Charlotte managed to win. During the following weeks the feud continued between the teams taking them to SummerSlam , where Team Bella, Team PCB and Team BAD faced each other in an Elimination Match, which PCB won. Once the Divas Revolution was over, then -Divas Champion Charlotte would defend her title against Becky Lynch and Sasha Banks at WrestleMania 32 . At WrestleMania 31, then-UFC star Ronda Rousey made an appearance alongside The Rock and faced off against Raw Commissioner Stephanie McMahon and WWE COO Triple H of The Authority., where Rousey attacked Triple H and scared Stephanie with an arm attempt, this after The Rock attacked Triple H. This fact of Wrestlemania 31, led to speculation that Rousey would eventually come to WWE. She made a few appearances over the next few years and was rumored to compete, in the 2018 Royal Rumble Women's Battle Royal, but denied she was at the event. However, after Asuka's victory in that match, the now-former UFC star made an appearance, confirming that she had signed with WWE full-time.At the Elimination Chamber event, Raw general manager Kurt Angle, Stephanie and Triple H introduced Rousey. Before signing her contract, Triple H confirmed that there were no special stipulations in the contract, but Rousey would have her debut at WrestleMania 34. Then Angle, whom Stephanie had previously threatened to shoot and whom Triple H had responded to in Survivor Series , mentioned the WrestleMania 31 incident, which had Rousey and The Rock with Triple H and Stephanie, and said that Triple H and Stephanie, wanted to manipulate Rousey as revenge. This eventually led to Rousey, attacking Triple H on top of a table, prompting Stephanie to slap Rousey, but she ran before Rousey could attack her and Rousey signed her contract. The next night on RawIn an attempt to keep her job, Angle said that she had lied and Stephanie thanked Angle, for clearing the air, However, Rousey wanted an apology for Stephanie's slap. Stephanie later apologized, but when she and Triple H left the ring, Triple H attacked Angle. On the March 5 episode, Stephanie said that Rousey could choose any active member of Raw, as her opponent at WrestleMania, except the champion; Rousey precisely chose Stephanie. Angle said that although Stephanie was an executive in WWE, she also had an exclusive contract, to compete as a wrestler. On April 9 on Raw , WWE announced that the 2018 WWE Superstar Shake-up will take place on April 16 and 17 on Raw and Smackdown Live . Instead of a traditional Draft and like last year, Raw General Manager Kurt Angle and new SmackDown Live General Manager Paige will have the "opportunity to do business, deals and other moves, that feel totally fit." In the same episode of Raw on April 9 , the program headed by Stephanie McMahon (who was injured in that episode by Ronda Rousey ) and Kurt Angle, brought in NXT superstars The Authors of Pain ( Rezar and Akam ), Ember Moon and No Way Jose in advance, and also brought about the return of Bobby Lashley , who finally returned to WWE, after 10 years out of the company. Precisely Lashley, had an emotional return to WWE, forcefully attacking Elias , interrupting his segment. But it is not known if these mentioned superstars will finally remain on Raw , during the development of the WWE Superstar Shake-up 2018.
A day later, on the April 10 episode of SmackDown Live , Blue Brand Commissioner Shane McMahon confirmed Daniel Bryan's resignation as General Manager, as he will once again be an active fighter of the Blue Brand cast and designated as his replacement, the former leader of the girl group Absolution Paige , who a day before on Raw , announced her definitive retirement from the activity, due to a neck injury. In the same chapter, Smackdown Live incorporated the pair of fighters from NXT The Iconic Duo ( Peyton Royce and Billie Kay ), who jointly attacked the female champion of Smackdown LiveCharlotte Flair and allowed Carmella , took the opportunity to use her Miss Money in the Bank briefcase , to snatch the championship from Flair and finally, managed to win the championship. Of course, it is also not known if The Iconic Duo will definitely stay on Smackdown Live , during the development of the WWE Superstar Shake-up 2018 .
The COVID-19 pandemic and WWE Thunderdome (2020-present)
During the month of March, the WHO announced that COVID-19 had been declared a " global pandemic ". Because of this, many professional wrestling companies suspended their live events. In the case of WWE, the last PPV that had had an audience present was Elimination Chamber , where some agreed fights were played, the most notable being the victory of Shayna Baszler who defeated Natalya , Liv Morgan , Asuka , Ruby Riott and Sarah Logan in an Elimination Chamber Match , earning a chance for theRaw Women's Championship . In addition, the last weekly show that had an audience was the episode of SmackDown on February 28, where John Cena appeared and then accepted the challenge of "The Fiend" Bray Wyatt at WrestleMania.
Due to this global health emergency , WWE suspended the NXT NXT TakeOver: Tampa Bay PPV event , where each fight of the event was reassigned to various NXT broadcast dates under the order of not having an audience present.
To this was added the idea of holding WrestleMania 36 without an audience, something that was extremely risky due to the change of venue, which would initially be on April 5, 2020 at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa , but due to the pandemic of the COVID-19, was transferred to the WWE Performance Center in Orlando , Florida, where all recorded and live WWE shows have been taking place since March 2020 without an audience. With all this, WrestleMania 36 was the first WrestleMania event that did not have an audience present and that was recorded for two different dates, also the first time that something like this was done in a PPV event. The first day was recorded on March 25 and broadcast on April 4, where some fights were carried out, of which the victories of The Undertaker over AJ Styles (with Luke Gallows & Karl Anderson ) in a Boneyard Match (which it had been recorded elsewhere); of John Morrison on Kofi Kingston andJimmy Uso in a Ladder Match for the SmackDown Tag Team Championship where only one member of each pair showed up due to The Miz's health problem ; and Becky Lynch's over Shayna Baszler , retaining the Raw Women's Championship . The second day was recorded on March 26 and broadcast on April 5, where they took the rest of the other fights, of which the victories of Drew McIntyre over Brock Lesnar (with Paul Heyman ) stood out , winning the Championship of the WWE ; of Edge on Randy Ortonin a Last Man Standing Match (being Edge's first fight since 2011); and Charlotte Flair's over Rhea Ripley , winning the NXT Women's Championship for the second time , being the first time that this title was contested at WrestleMania.
After the event, recorded and live broadcasts of Raw, SmackDown, NXT, Main Event and 205 Live have been taking place from the WWE Perfomance Center. Added to this was the entry of NXT fighters to Raw and SmackDown such as Shayna Baszler , Bianca Belair , Austin Theory , The Forgotten Sons ( Jaxson Ryker , Wesley Blake and Steve Cutler ), and the incorporation of new fighters as part of NXT such as Timothy Thatcher , The Son of the Ghost and Kayden Carter .
Due to the economic crisis that the company would go through due to the global pandemic of COVID-19, which has had as consequences the non-attendance of the public to its events, the withdrawal of advertisers and the cancellation of national and international tours, WWE announced in June a drastic cut in personnel among wrestlers, commentators, referees, ring advertisers and technical, logistical and creative personnel of the company. Among the fighters fired by the company to cut costs were Rusev , Karl Anderson , Luke Gallows , Erick Rowan , EC3 , Curt Hawkins , Zack Ryder and Sarah Logan., among others, from the Raw team; While on the SmackDown side, Heath Slater , Primo , Epic and Drake Maverick , among others, were fired . Likewise, there were also dismissals of 205 Live and NXT fighters such as Aiden English , Maria Kanellis , Mike Kanellis , Deonna Purrazzo and Lio Rush , among many others. [ 12 ] Subsequently, more exits of fighters such as Cain Velasquez , Curtis Axel , Taynara Conti , Tino Sabbatelli andCezar Bononi , among others.
With the strong measures already in place, it was decided to carry out the next PPV event which was Money in The Bank . The event was originally scheduled to take place at the Royal Farms Arena in Baltimore, Maryland , but the venue canceled all shows and ended up taking place both at the WWE Perfomance Center in Florida and at WWE headquarters in Stamford, Connecticut. ) , where the central fight of the event took place, which was a Corporate Ladder Match between the participants AJ Styles , Aleister Black , Rey Mysterio , Daniel Bryan , King Corbinand Otis and the participants Nia Jax , Shayna Baszler , Asuka , Lacey Evans , Dana Brooke and Carmella , where both briefcases would be in the same place suspended above the ring; in which it ended with Asuka and Otis as respective winners of the briefcases.
Since May 25 on Raw, all recorded and live shows have limited audiences, which are mostly personal from the WWE Perfomance Center or the cast of NXT.
During the month of August, the creation of WWE Thunderdome was announced , a concept of virtual fan experience with each broadcast of WWE and its fighters. This was developed in the vicinity of the Amway Center in Orlando, Florida where it consists of an armed ring in the middle of the arena and is surrounded by video screens where each of them will be intended for a fan who has registered to see the live broadcast. from Raw and SmackDown. Additionally, the set features video boards, pyrotechnics, lasers, graphics, and drone cameras as part of the WWE Thunderdome idea. The first event under this concept was SummerSlam which had several fights to present, the most outstanding being the victory of "The Fiend" Bray Wyatton Braun Strowman for the WWE Universal Championship and the return of Roman Reigns after several weeks of being inactive. After this, new fighters and personnel were incorporated including Dominik Mysterio and the return of Wade Barrett and Drake Maverick . To that, some fighters belonging to NXT joined the main cast, such as Matt Riddle , Keith Lee , Dominik Dijakovic , Dio Maddin , Shane Thorne and Mia Yim. Changes were also made in relation to NXT where the events began to take place in the WWE Performance Center under a concept similar to the Thunderdome with screens where fans would present but with a limited audience made up of the cast of NXT and apprentices of the Performance Center.
Entering 2021, WWE took on a new challenge regarding one of its main PPV's: The Royal Rumble. It was planned to carry out this event with a limited audience but finally, it was carried out without an audience like the previous ones. Likewise, the departure of some fighters such as Steve Cutler and Lars Sullivan was announced , and the incorporation of NXT talents to the main roster such as Damian Priest and Rhea Ripley .
To this is added that, the first female version of the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic was carried out with its male counterpart, which wore its sixth version. In this tournament, Wes Lee and Nash Carter (formerly known as The Rascalz ) debuted alongside Gigi Dolin (known as Priscilla Kelly). At NXT TakeOver: Vengeance Day , Wes Lee and Nash Carter were the winners of the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic. Also, Dakota Kai and Raquel González were the first winners of the female version of the tournament. Among some important facts, is the incorporation of the NXT Women's Tag Team Championship, a championship in pairs that would promote the division of pairs within the feminine roster, being Dakota Kai and Raquel González the first champions.
In the direction of WrestleMania 37 , several plans were prepared for its execution with the public present. The first thing was to move the venue of the event to Raymond James Stadium in Tampa , Florida , temporarily leaving the WWE Perfomance Center. In an interview with TMZ Sports on January 19, Stephanie McMahon affirmed WWE's plan to have live fans present at WrestleMania 37, stating that "hopefully this will be the first opportunity for our fans to attend again." Detail that if it happened, since the event was carried out with the public present.

Talent Health and Wellness Program
The Health and Wellness Program Talent ( The Talent Wellness Program ) is a program against drugs, alcohol and heart problems. It is an exclusive program of the World Wrestling Entertainment company, which began in February 2006, shortly after the sudden death of one of its highest-profile talents, Eddie Guerrero . Police screening tests indicated recreational drug use and abuse of prescription drugs, including anabolic steroids. The talent is screened annually for pre-existing or developing heart conditions. Cardiac evaluations are conducted by the New York Cardiology Associates PC .
The show has recently been heavily defended by WWE due to 11 employees being linked to illegal pharmacies and linking wrestlers in purchasing steroids even after the policy was put in place. WWE fired and suspended all 11 employees after releasing their names in connection with the purchase of steroids and anabolics.
WWE is being investigated by the House of Oversight and Reform Commission of the United States Government regarding his talent welfare policy, after the death of one of the wrestlers, Chris Benoit , may be linked to steroid abuse.
In August 2007, WWE suspended ten professional wrestlers after violation of its Welfare Policy stemming from reports that they were all customers of a pirate pharmacy in Orlando, Florida. According to a statement attributed to WWE attorney Jerry McDevitt, an eleventh wrestler, he was later added to the suspension list.
Furthermore, due to health policy, doctors were able to diagnose one of their fighters with a heart ailment that would otherwise likely have gone unnoticed until it was too late. In August 2007, the then United States champion , Alvin Burke, Jr. (better known as Montel Vontavious Porter) was diagnosed with Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome , which if it had not been diagnosed in time would have had fatal consequences. . The disease was discovered while Montel Vontavious Porter was undergoing a routine Wellness checkup.
WWE uses a variety of special terms to promote its product, such as describing the wrestling industry as sports entertainment . The fan base is known as "The WWE Universe". A wrestler is designated a "WWE Superstar", while retired wrestlers are described as "WWE Legends" (or " Hall of Famers " if they have been inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame ). [ 13 ]

(UWA). These working relationships led to the creations of the WWF World Martial Arts , Light Heavyweight and Intercontinental Tag Team championships . [ 14 ] [ 15 ] [ 16 ]

NXT and NXT UK currently serve as official development territories for WWE. [ 23 ]

They are not allowed to appear or perform for another promotion, unless special arrangements are made in advance. WWE keeps the salary of all wrestlers, the length of employment, benefits and all other details of the contract are strictly private. [ 24 ]
WWE classifies its professional wrestlers as "independent contractors" and not as employees. A study by the University of Louisville School of Law found that after applying the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) 20-factor test , 16 factors "clearly indicate that the fighters are employed." However, as a result of WWE labeling them independent contractors, "wrestlers are denied countless benefits to which they would otherwise be entitled." [ 25 ]
Currently the company has 18 championships, of which 10 are defended in the main brands of RAW and SmackDown , the most important championships being the WWE Championship and the WWE Universal Championship . And 8 lower-ranking championships defended on the NXT , 205 Live and NXT UK development brands .
